United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response – UN-SPIDER

In its resolution 61/110 of 14 December 2006 the United Nations General Assembly agreed to establish the "United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response – UN-SPIDER", as a new programme of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, to provide universal access to all countries and all relevant international and regional organizations to all types of space-based information and services relevant to disaster management to support the full disaster management cycle.

In its resolution 62/217 of 21 December 2007 the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the UN-SPIDER plan of work for 2007, the platform programme for the period 2007-2009 and the plan of work for the period 2008-2009 and requested the Secretary-General to implement those activities that are contained in the plan of work for the period 2008-2009. In order to successfully carry out these activities full commitment will be needed from the Network of Regional Support Offices.

Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS)

This proposed Operational Plan was presented to the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space at its Forty-Fifth session, which took place from 11 – 22 February 2008 at the UN in Vienna.. During the first week the Subcommittee considered the Agenda Item 6 – Space-system-based disaster management support and the presence of the experts that joined us for the Expert Meeting in Salzburg greatly enhanced the discussions on UN-SPIDER in both the plenary and the UN-SPIDER Stakeholders’ Meeting on Wednesday 13 February 2008 at 13:00 – 15:00hrs.
