Z_GIS is an interdisciplinary centre for Geoinformatics contributing to the effective visualisation, understanding, management and communication of spatial phenomena of the Earth system. It is dedicated to applied research, outreach activities, professional training and aims to act as catalyst in the implementation of new technologies for spatial decision support and policy implementation.

Z_GIS is generating new knowledge based on research in conceptual, methodological and applied aspects within geoinformation science. It supports knowledge transfer form the scientific to the application domain.

It has become a centre of expertise for a number of regional industry partners and is an active member of several international organizations such as AGILE, GISIG and AGEO.

Z_GIS has also developed a strong communication role by organizing the annual AGIT symposium since 1989 and the English language GI_Forum since 2007. Z_GIS has also attained a unique position in international postgraduate and continuing education through the worldwide UNIGIS distance learning programme as well as regular seminar series and qualification programmes.

The Z_GIS Team consists of 30 people contributing to the domains of AGIT & GI_Forum, research in GIScience and Remote Sensing, UNIGIS, Seminars, and Summer Schools.
